What is SimplySefer?
SimplySefer is a community marketplace for buying, selling, and finding seforim and Judaica. Sellers post listings with photos, condition, and price; buyers search by keyword, category, or distance and message the seller directly. It is built specifically for the seforim market rather than adapted from a general classifieds site.
Does SimplySefer handle payment?
No. SimplySefer does not process payments and does not hold funds in escrow, including for auctions. Buyers and sellers arrange payment and handoff between themselves through the messaging flow, and each user is responsible for their own transactions and pickup arrangements.
How do I sell seforim on SimplySefer?
Create a listing from the seller flow, upload photos, and fill in the title, category, condition, and price. You can optionally use the photo-based listing assistant, which sends your photos to Google's Gemini API to suggest the title, category, and condition — those suggestions are a starting point you review and edit before publishing, and you can skip the step and fill everything in yourself. Once the listing is live, interested buyers message you through the site, and you mark the listing sold when the sale is complete.
What kinds of listings can I post?
There are three listing types. A selling listing offers a sefer at a fixed price; a wanted listing announces that you are looking for a specific sefer; and an auction runs for a set period and closes to the highest bid. On a selling listing the price can be a set amount, marked free, or left as contact for price.
How do auctions work on SimplySefer?
A seller can turn a selling listing into a time-limited auction. Signed-in buyers accept the auction terms and place bids, and the highest valid bid wins when the auction closes. Guests can view an auction but cannot bid, sellers cannot bid on their own auctions, and a bid placed close to the deadline extends the end time so an auction cannot be won by sniping in the final seconds.
What is a wanted listing?
A wanted listing is a public post saying you are looking for a particular sefer, rather than offering one for sale. Anyone who has a copy can respond to it directly. It is the right choice when the sefer you need is not currently listed and you want people who own it to come to you.
What is a Lookout?
A Lookout is a private saved request for a sefer you are trying to find. Unlike a wanted listing it is not visible to other users; instead SimplySefer notifies you when a new or existing listing is judged to match what you asked for. Use a wanted listing when you want to be seen, and a Lookout when you would rather just be told.
How do I contact a seller?
Open the listing and use the message button to start a conversation with the seller in the site's messaging system. Conversations update in real time and you are notified by email when a reply arrives, so you do not have to keep the page open while waiting.
How do I know whether a seller is reliable?
Sellers have public profiles showing their listings, their star rating, and any reviews they have received. A buyer can leave a one-to-five star rating with an optional written review only after the seller has actually replied in their conversation, which means ratings reflect real interactions rather than drive-by feedback. Sellers can also earn badges for sustained activity on the site.
What condition grades does SimplySefer use?
Listings use five condition grades: New, Like New, Good, Fair, and Poor. For seforim the grade should reflect the binding and spine as much as the pages, since a sefer that has been learned from heavily often has a sound text block and a failing spine. For a multi-volume set, state whether the set is complete, because a missing volume affects value more than wear does.
How should I price a used sefer?
Search SimplySefer for the same title and edition to see what comparable copies are listed at, and note that edition matters more than age. For sets, completeness is the dominant factor: a complete set in fair condition is generally worth more than an incomplete set in good condition. If you are unsure, listing as contact for price lets you gauge interest before committing to a number.
What should I photograph when listing a sefer?
Photograph the title page, the spine, the binding, and any damage, and for a set include a shot of all the volumes together so a buyer can count them. The title page identifies the edition, which is the detail buyers ask about most often. For Judaica, photograph any hallmarks or maker's marks, since those drive value in a way that condition alone does not.
What can I list besides seforim?
Judaica is a full category on SimplySefer, covering ritual and ceremonial objects such as menorahs, kiddush cups, mezuzah cases, and Torah ornaments. Antique seforim and manuscripts have their own category as well, since those are bought as collectibles and call for more detailed photographs and disclosure than an ordinary listing.
Can I search SimplySefer from ChatGPT or another AI assistant?
Yes. SimplySefer runs a Model Context Protocol server that lets a connected assistant search live public listings and look up a specific listing by its id. The connection is read-only: an assistant can find and describe listings but cannot create them, place bids, or message sellers on your behalf.
